Theater Seats Update

By: Allyson Keys

I wanted to share a previous project that I finished.  I found these seats at a little shop for a price that I could not turn down.  I fell in love instantly, and my ever understanding husband helped me get them loaded up and on their way to our house.

Unfortunately, when we got to the house, the seats were just too long for the few spaces I had in mind for them.  After much contemplation, I decided the only way to make them work in our current house was to make it into two seats.  So I brought them to my workshop (just my 110 year old garage that is at a scary 30 degree tilt to the right).  Although I was nervous about taking the seats apart and not being able to put them back together correctly, it soon became easy--I just made sure that I kept all the nuts, bolts and screws in little, labeled piles.

Next came the gross part.  Now these seats have been around for awhile, so under the seats was a collection of gum and dried candy that former owners were finished with.  Following the scraping and a little sanding, I decided on my favorite color--an Annie Sloan mix of half Old White and half Pure White (also known as Original White, but it is not sold in North America--Sad Face).  I also spray painted the metal work a metallic black because it had an array of orange, green and brown colors.

After tediously putting the seats back together, they now can fit in smaller spaces.  Perfect for our front entry.  Of course, I kept the third seat just in case we moved to another place that they will fit--but that is a story for another day!  Hope you find inspiration in my little update.  Blessings--
